Purpose: The course is designed to provide the OT, COTA, PT, PTA and/or rehab technicians with immediate functional communication skills in Armenian to facilitate cross cultural communication between occupational therapy service provider and Armenian speaking clients.
Target Audience: Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, and Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, Rehab Technicians/Occupational Therapy Aides working in California.

Course Instructor Biographies:
Jacqueline Thrash, OTR, has been practicing in northern, central and southern California and Arizona for more than 22 years and recognized a need for material to improve the functional communication between occupational therapists and Spanish speaking clients. She is a national speaker and the international author of Common Phrase Translation: Spanish, and the Person to Person columnist for ADVANCE for Occupational Therapy Practitioners. Thrash has developed a home study course based on her book, and an onsite course, Common Phrase Translation: Spanish for Physical Therapists which she teaches at Western University Physical Therapy Program in Pomona CA and is a guest lecturer for the Spanish for Physical Therapy class at Mount Saint Mary's College in Los Angeles CA. As a one of the Directors of Rehab for interface rehab; and the OT Director at Glendale Hills Adult Day Healthcare, she comes in contact with many Spanish speaking clients.
Jacqueline Thrash is currently enrolled in the online post-professional MS in Occupational Therapy at San Jose State University, and this Armenian pilot class is an Advocacy Project for her MSOT coursework.
Onnik Hayrapetian, PhD, holds a B.A. in Armenian Language and Literature from University of Isfahan, Iran, an M.A. in General Linguistics (concentrated on Armenian Language and Linguistics) from University of Tehran, Iran, a Ph.D. in Education and Public Relations from University of Urartu in Yerevan, Armenia. He has also been studying General Linguistics in the Ph. D. program at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, USA). He has over 30 years experience in teaching Armenian Language, Linguistics and Literature in elementary and high schools, colleges, and universities. He also holds private tutoring sessions. His private students include doctors, lawyers, teachers, police personnel, city council members, clergies, and business people. He has been teaching Armenian Language at Glendale Community College since 1990, Armenian Studies at Mashdots College since 1992, where he is the chair person of the Armenian Studies Department. Meanwhile, he is the Educational Director at Davidian and Mariamian Educational Foundation in Glendale. He also is a member of Armenian Studies Association in Fresno, California. Onnik Hayrapetian has a unique approach to the Armenian; he has his students reading and writing Armenian at the first meeting.

Karmen Keshishian, a native Armenian speaker, is a rehab technician for Glendale Hills Adult Day Healthcare Center.
Juliette Tsaturyan, a native Armenian speaker, is a rehab technician for Glendale Hills Adult Day Healthcare Center.
Instructional Methods:
PowerPoint Presentation, lecture, group discussion, group practice of target phrases, Scenarios for situational practice .
Learning Objectives:
1: Increase awareness of Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS)
mandates, and available evidence regarding addressing language barriers with
limited English proficient (LEP) clients.
2: Recognize vocabulary differences in Armenian speaking clients from different
nationalities and consider other factors (social-economic, educational, cultural, etc)
that will influence the communication process.
3: Increase understanding of the effects of language barrier on the client.
4: Express 30 common functional occupational therapy phrases in Armenian.
Method of Measuring Effectiveness of Language Learning:
A pre-test/post-test will be given to measure change in language skills. Three check points (quizes) will be given as well.
**This class includes a pilot study in the effectiveness of Armenian language training with OT and PT. Participation in the study is optional. Consent forms will be offered at the beginning of the class.
A Language Exposure survey and Perceptions of Cultural and Linguistic Barriers survey will be collected for the study. Those who consent to participate in the study will have their pre-test/post-test scores used as data**
Topics include: Greetings and Good-byes, General and Courtesy Phrases, Introductions and Self Identification, Communication Strategies, Encouragement, Diagnostic Questions and Commands, Beginning Therapy and Therapy Directions.
Course Materials: Course includes course manual and audio CD, and Common Phrase Translation: Armenian for English Speakers for Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Speech Therapy.

She assists Jacqueline Thrash with the Spanish for Physical Therapist class held annually at Western University in Pomona CA.

Aurora Rowland, OTR, a native Spanish speaker, has been practicing for 13 years in southern California. She is a staff therapist for interface rehab. Ms. Rowland is the vocal talent for the course audio CD.
Erika Lopez, a native Spanish speaker, is a rehab technician for interface rehab.
Alice Murphy is a former rehab tech for interface rehab and currently enrolled in Mt St Mary's DPT program.
